Catch them before it’s too late!
We’ve worked with a lot of invasive plants and seen the damage they can do firsthand. Below is a quick list of some you’ll likely recognize. We’ve also rated them on a simple 1–10 scale—1 meaning “not too concerning” and 10 meaning “serious threat to your property and landscape.”
Lilly of the valley - 7/10
This beautiful flower will look very nice in your garden until it takes over completely and doesn’t allow anything else to grow. Has very dense deep rhizomes that are very hard and expensive to remove.
Japanese knotweed - 10/10
The king of invasives… Has a rhizome system that can go up to 10 feet deep and 20 feet wide. Will grow back more aggressively if cut or chopped. causes structure damage. MUST be excavated or targeted with herbicide over multiple seasons.
Japanese Barberry - 6/10
Takes over an area with dense cover causing surrounding plants to be fully shaded out and attracts some pests like ticks due to its moist and dense cover. spreads commonly through birds eating the berries into local forests.
Tree of Heaven - 10/10
Will damage structures and gets more aggressive when cut or trimmed. Sends runners up causing more trees to grow and releases compounds that kill surrounding plants. This tree is bad news
English Ivy 8/10
Looks nice until it’s all you see. Will easily take over an area and smother surrounding plants and trees killing native landscapes. Also very hard to remove.
